NUI and other Language Exemptions

Any 6th year student who does not study Irish or a ‘third language’ will need to apply for a NUI exemption if they wish to enter a  NUI college such as UCD, UCC,  NCAD  or RCSI.  This is not the same as a Department of Education and Science Language Exemption.   The NUI exemption from Irish and/ or a Third Language for matriculation purposes means that a student granted this will not need to meet the usual requirement to pass Irish and/or a third language at Leaving Certificate. This exemption is for matriculation purposes only.  If a language is a specific requirement for a course it is still a requirement.   You can find more information on this blog and on http://www.nui.ie .  Students applying on the basis of nationality need to fill in the form available online and in guidance and can submit it with a copy of a passport or birth certificate.  Students applying on the basis of SLD or absence from Ireland will need to apply through their guidance counsellor.
