HOW CAN I FIND OUT MORE ABOUT SUBJECTS?
Talk to your guidance counsellor, teachers and others students as well as family and friends to gather information and advice.
Arrange to talk with a subject teacher about the subject.
Look at the text books for the subject and the exam archives on http://www.examinations.ie for past papers and marking schemes.
You can check out subject information on http://www.careersportal.ie under Schools and subject choice.
WHAT’S THE EASIEST SUBJECT AND WHAT’S THE HARDEST?
No Leaving Cert or IB subject is easy, but studying a subject you enjoy and that you are really interested in means you are more likely to invest time in it, work hard and get higher marks in it. Bear in mind you will spend two years of your life studying this so it makes sense to choose a subject that you will enjoy.
HOW CAN I TELL IF A SUBJECT WILL SUIT ME?
Talk to those who know you – your family, friends and your guidance counsellor and subject teachers. Consider your past exam results. Consider the results of your Cambridge Profile and your REACH learner’s profile. What kind of learner are you? How will your working week balance out in terms of different subject styles? Will the assessment format suit you? What about the exam paper? Will you respond well to essay style questions or would you prefer a subject which has project work as part of the assessment? These are all aspects to consider and discuss.
