NUI language exemptions

If you are a 6th year student who does not study Irish or a second or third language you should make sure you have got an exemption for Matriculation purposes from either the NUI or the other relevant colleges. This does not exempt you from studying a language in school but it means that once you have the exemption you will not be required to pass a language in order to matriculate or ‘get into’ university. Failure to attain the exemption could result in a student losing a place that they would otherwise be offered.

Details of the NUI exemption can be found on http://www.nui.ie

If you already have a NUI exemption you must ensure they also have your CAO number.

You should check your CAO statement of application carefully in May to ensure your NUI exemption is listed correctly.

The NUI exemption is not the same as the DES Department of Education exemption.

Come and see us in Guidance if you need any help.
